this month I love…
the design of Canada’s National Newspaper. On a recent visit to Toronto I picked up a copy of ‘The Globe and Mail’(weekend edition) one of the best designed newspapers I have come across (the redesigned was launched in 2010) The new serif fonts were created by Nick Shinn inspired by existing fonts, the paper moved away from the use of sans fonts which is very refreshing and the font combination work really well together. The colour pallet is vast and the use of graphic elements such as rules, colour bars, drop capitals, quote marks etc (all pretty mundane when listed like this) added to the play with type sizes, use of a five column grid, the mix of semi-gloss or gloss paper and the use of bold photography, with the space it needs, creates a very contemporary piece. The format slightly narrower and shorter page (12X21 inches) is so functional it allows the reader ease of use on public transport without invading the personal space of others. I have my copy within easy reach. Colette
